The Netherlands: PhD Studentship at Department of Microbial Physiology, University of Groningen
This project will be a unique collaboration between the Microbial Physiology department and the Groningen Bioinformatics Centre
using a newly acquired state-of-art ultra-high resolution LTQ-Orbitrap mass spectrometer in the Medical Biomics Facility to determine the metabolome of Streptomyces coelicolor.
Project objectives
Comprehensively explore the cellular and secreted metabolome of Streptomyces species to identify novel antibiotic biosynthesis
pathways, using ultra-high resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometry Understand the fundamental changes of the metabolome during the switch from primary to secondary metabolism, i.e. when antibiotics are produced, in S. coelicolor, our model organism.
Requirements
Candidates should have training in biochemistry, microbiology, and molecular biology. Experience in bioinformatics, and handling Streptomyces, would be a plus.

department is one of the leading institutes of Microbiology in Europe. It is part of the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute (GBB), which houses 13 different research groups and provides access to state-of-the-art research facilities to more than 100 PhD students and 30 faculty members.
Research in the Microbial Physiology group focuses on structure/function relationships of enzymes acting on carbohydrates,
and differentiation, regulation and metabolic engineering of antibiotic production in Streptomyces. The Bioinformatics Centre is a major player in the development of modern Systems Biology approaches.

Applications are invited for a Ph.D. position to work on Interacting stochastic models on complex networks
Complex networks with small-world properties occur in a multitude of real-world communication networks. In this project we shall investigate the nature of interacting systems on such networks and understand their phase-transitions.
The student will be supervised by C. K ulske, A. C. D. van Enter (Groningen) and R. van der Hofstad (Eurandom, Eindhoven). The Ph.D. student will be based in Groningen with longer visits to Eurandom.
The Groningen group working on the probability theory of interacting systems will consist of two sta members, two senior part-time positions and 4 Ph.D. students, and has strong international ties.
The contract is for 4 years and the Ph.D. student will be a full employee of the University of Groningen, with monthly salary according to the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities. This is at the moment 1956, 2279, 2387, 2502 Euro for the rst year up to the
fourth year. The position is nanced by an NWO (Netherlands Organisation for Scienti c Research) "Open Competitie" grant. It is open for both non-Dutch and Dutch applicants.

About the MyCare Project
The MyCare project is a joint initiative of the Computer Science Department of the University of Groningen and of the Department of Psychiatry of the Groningen University Medical Hospital. MyCare aims at building information technology tools to support patients with schizophrenia for personal recovery and risk assessment. The tools are tested with actual patients in a controlled environment. This exciting PhD project combines the creation of innovative software tools with actual medical field work.
The position is financed in the context of the Dutch ZonMW program for medical innovation. Another PhD student will be hired to work on the MyCare project in the field of Psychiatry.
The position is open in the Distributed Systems unit lead by Prof. Marco Aiello in close collaboration with the Intelligent Systems unit lead by Prof. Nicolai Petkov .
Required profile
-You should have a M.Sc. or equivalent in computer science or a related discipline
-You are expected to have an excellent academic record (list of examination marks from your university degree) and be curious, creative and ambitious.
-You should be able to write scientific articles and reports (proven by your graduation thesis or another comparable report) and be fluent in both written and spoken English.
-You should enjoy programming and designing medium/large size (Web-based) information systems.
Conditions of employment
The University of Groningen offers outstanding candidates a Ph.D. position. The position is for a period of four years which should result in the Ph.D. defense of the candidate. The salary starts from about 1500 euros per month in the first year and will be adjusted to general price movements once a year. After one year, the performance of the candidate will be evaluated to decide whether there is sufficient progress to expect a successful completion of the Ph.D. thesis within the remaining three years. A training program is part of the agreement to support the Ph.D. candidates in their professional and personal development as well as their career planning.
